WordPress Theme Design

Last week I started a series of posts concerning WordPress theme design and building a custom theme.  After walking through my method of creating a basic blank theme I took a quick break and wanted to check in before starting up the next leg.

Has the first leg of the series been helpful at all?

I think that anytime people create tutorials on theme generation for Wordpress, it helps someone out there. Right now, for me to decide if it is helpful I’d need to see full sized screen shots and more detail about what is happening under the hood. I also think that before you ever sit down and try to design a theme you should take an inventory of your audience and consider usability. It’s easier to build a usable theme from the ground up than it is to retrofit one. I guess I need to see more to form an opinion.

    Hi Bill,

Yep, been a great help to me so far. I’ve spent plenty of hours tweaking existing themes, and fiddling with other peoples php, but seeing a straight-forward first principles look at how a theme fits together makes me want to retheme my site to look exactly as I want it… if only there were more hours in the day :-)

I’m really looking forward to more of the series!

I’m keeping tabs on your progress since I’d eventually like to make my own theme from scratch. It looks like you’re doing great so far.
